About the Project

Two of us wanted a better way to track spending and budgets than a shared spreadsheet, so we built MoneyBonsai: an installable, offline-first Progressive Web App for expense tracking, categorization, and budgeting, with Firebase handling sync in the background.

We applied to YCombinator’s Startup School, got in, and graduated the cohort in November 2018: growth fundamentals, startup practices, and a mentor network, on top of the product work.

Result

Hundreds of people used it to track their spending, and it held up as a real answer to whether a PWA could replace a native app for something people open every day, which is what we set out to prove.
